Design and Operation Experience with MW-Scale Photovoltaic Power Plants –BIPV Application and Flat-Mounted System

Experiences in design, construction, trial-run and operation of two different MW-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems will be shared in this speech. One is a BIPV (Building-integrated Photovoltaic) system built on the rooftop of a sport stadium for 2009 World Games, while the other is a flat mounted solar power generation system built for an existing coal-fired power plant. The main challenge for the design of the BIPV system was to maximize the solar energy harvest when the semi-spiral shaped stadium rooftop demands a wide range of diverse tilt angles and orientations of the modules. String inverters and performance-based string level monitoring system were thus adopted and applied; estimated annual power generation was achieved only 9 months after commissioning of the system. Whereas, the flat-mounted PV system has adopted central inverter topology to reduce the wiring and maintenance cost after commissioning, In addition to the original design concept and electrical topologies, issues raised from performance results will be presented and discussed for the two typical PV applications as well. Moreover, control and monitoring architecture at module-level, string-level and central-level will also be illustrated for further discussions.
